Domestic Abuse is a serious crime and it is NEVER the victim’s fault. Under the new legal definition, Domestic Abuse covers the following: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, isolation and financial abuse. Additionally, it covers coercive or controlling behaviour. Below are some examples for each type of abuse (this is not an exhaustive list and there are many more examples than those listed here. If you are concerned about someone’s behaviour to you or your behaviour to someone else then please get in touch).
Physical: hitting, stabbing, kicking, throwing objects, pushing and slapping
Sexual: unwanted touching, rape, demanding sex, forcing others to watch pornography and withholding sex as a form of control
Emotional: verbal abuse, intimidation, humiliation, name calling, ignoring and diminishing the self-esteem of another
Isolation: stopping from seeing family or friends, limiting when a person can go out and who they can see
Financial: controlling all the money, making someone explain every penny they spend, putting debts in their name, withholding money and stopping others from working for money.
